What Axé Means: Pronounced (Ah-shae)

Adopted from the Brazilian art form Capoeira, Axe’ loosely means good energy or mojo. When we walk through the doors of our “station” every afternoon, we fist bump every member of the group, giving them Axe’. By doing so, we acknowledge not just everyone’s presence within our group, but more importantly, we appreciate each others’ potential to do good work on air.

When voting for a name, we chose Axe’ Radio. Maybe because it sounds cool or maybe because it is a bit different. Regardless, we are Axe’ Radio because we want to celebrate positivity and more importantly, share that with our community.

Axé .

In a class, in a school, there lived some students. Not some nasty, dirty, greasy students who haven’t bathed in years; nor some powdered, prissy, snide students who went to private school; but High Tech High students, and that meant business casual comfort. One day, a small, brown bird crashed through the numerous windows of the school with a tremendous BANG! Landing on the desk in front of the chosen students, the sparrow stood, reorganized it’s feathers and spoke to them in a deep, booming voice, saying “You are supposed to be the chosen ones! You are to take the rainbow portal to the fantasy realm, where you will find a scraggly man near a bush. Tell him Jack the Sparrow sent you.” With that, the sparrow flew off, a lonely island song following in his wake, and a rainbow portal opening at the feet of the students.

The students stumbled down until they reached hard ground, then decided to explore. They met a man near a bush, telling them his name was Alex. They spoke of Jack the Sparrow, and he was hooked. As they continued walking, they came across a cliff. Hoping that there was fast food below, they all jumped off. They screamed and fell for a while. after a good twenty seconds, they realized they were still not passed the fog layer. Scared for their lives, they all passed out, and met an elephant in their dreams who tells them to find the portal. They all woke up, right before landing onto a pile of pillows.

Then, suddenly, they all woke up again on a giant, circular bed. They all let off a sigh, saying under their breath “It was only a dream?” Someone suggested milk with brownies. With enthusiasm, Alex shouted “Sure!” Two of them attempted to stop him before doing something wrong, but it was too late. Bessie the Cardboard Cow was summoned. “Moo Moo, milk-drinkers!” He exclaimed as he karate-chopped everyone to death.

When they all woke up, everybody realized they were alive underneath a radio antenna. Taking all this information from their adventure, Axé Radio was born.
